How I’m Studying From Home

Hi y’all! I hope staying home hasn’t gotten to you too much during this time. I know it can be hard to stay productive, and it’s totally okay to have moments without any productivity at all! Here’s tips I’ve been doing while I’m studying from home and trying to stay productive, and I hope some of them might help you out too!

Go to classes on zoom when they are scheduled (even if there is an option to watch lectures later).

I know it’s not super fun to attend a 9am ochem lecture four times a week when I could just stay in bed but it gives me some sense of routine since I was used to going to that class when school was still in-person. Today is my one day of the week where I don’t have 9am lecture so I slept in and boy let me tell you.. today was extremely unproductive lol.

Create somewhat of a weekly schedule on Google Calendar.

When classes were still on campus I had them down pat in my calendar with times and such for my meetings and extracurriculars. Now things are a little different because I only attend one class (out of four) at its designated time because the professor does lecture during that time. My other classes I put on google calendar based off what I know I should get done that day. For example, I usually have 3 to 4 modules for psychology so I put in blocks of about an hour every other day labeled “PSY 202- mod 1″ or something similar. This then brings me to my next point which you know is my favorite..

Make a daily to-do list!

When I’m not feeling too productive I put my to-do list on a post-it note and stick it to my laptop but usually I make my weekly schedule on Google Calendar and then switch over my tasks to my bullet journal. I put about 3-5 things to do every day within the week, leaving out Saturdays because I learned this year in college that I should always take off at least a day from classwork entirely for self-care. I put due dates, zoom calls, calls I need to make, etc. on there so I know what’s up.

Work during productive times (and don’t continue working all day).

Even though I really dislike waking up early (or at any time for that matter), I know that my most productive hours are between 9am and 12pm with another lil spark of productivity from 6pm to 8pm. So I’ve developed a routine where I work on schoolwork from about 9am to 2pm when my mom gets home from work (shoutout healthcare workers!!). Anything I didn’t get done during that time either moves to the 6pm time slot if it’s something I can do from my room easily (since I do work in my dad’s office in the morning time) or to the next day if it’s not due too soon.

Set timers and take breaks.

If you saw my last post you know I’m currently in love with the Focus To-Do app because it’s the only thing I’ve found that keeps me truly productive. Forest also works well as a pomodoro timer, but I like to be able to pause without my tree dying in case I really need to take a break or something. So set your timer for a decent time (25 minutes seems to work the best for people), do your work during that time, and then take a break (5 minutes). I only really work through my breaks when I’m super close to finishing something otherwise I take my break. On these breaks, I walk around my house, maybe go outside for some sun, grab a snack, look at my social media, etc. Then it begins again! This really helps me not feel so burnt out by classwork.

Self-care!!

Y’all already know how important self-care is (it’s so important I dedicate my whole Saturday to doing only things that make me feel good, accomplished, relaxed, or happy lol!) and I don’t need to repeat it but here’s some self-care things I enjoy!

Go outside and sit in the sun.

Read a book.

Watch favorite youtubers.

Watch favorite shows (mine is currently Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist on Hulu).

Bake something (bonus points if its with the fam!).

Water your plants!

Do a mini-workout.

Journal/bullet journal.

The constant clacking on laptops, pencils and pens scribbling on notebooks, the somewhat annoying clicking of pens or tapping of pens against the table, and you were pretty sure there was someone crying at one of the closed single desks in the corner. Truly, the epitome of college students in midterm season.

You eyed Ameris off to the side who was obviously zoning out as she stared at her laptop screen. Sugawara beside her who was surprisingly studying intently, not that that was surprising since he’d use it as a routine back during nationals in high school. 

Daichi beside you had a little bit of a concentrated look, perhaps border constipated. You laughed quietly, getting side-eyed by everyone at the table (except for Ameris, she was still zoned out). Daichi raised a brow but you silently waved him off as if it was nothing. 

He promptly went back to burying his hand in his hair as he leaned on his arm, trying to plan out his final essay, even skimming through the books he had to read for his criminology class to find evidence and quotes. 

Meanwhile, you were struggling with organic chemistry. God, why did premed students have to learn ochem (okay well you knew why but it still sucked). Admittedly, you have been working a little bit too much. Seeing as you’ve had an energy drink (courtesy of Ameris) as well as coffee (courtesy of Daichi). 

When was the last time you slept? 

As you eyed Ameris, beginning to fall asleep and Sugawara jabbing her on the side to wake her up (cue her whining and pushing him away by his face), Daichi passed you a small note with his scribbly handwriting that was just very him.

You alright? We can head back to the apartment if you want. 

You smiled, looking up at him then grabbing your pen to write back underneath. 

yeah just a bit tired, stressed. but its alright how’s your essay coming along?

Daichi frowned as he read your little note, especially at the way you brushed off your exhaustion. 

Alright, let’s go home.

With that, he began packing his things and Ameris and Sugawara glanced up. You couldn’t even protest against him.

“You guys heading back?” Ameris asked quietly, rubbing her eyes with a yawn which promptly caused you to yawn in return. 

“Yeah, just gonna get some rest before studying again tomorrow,” you replied with a tired smile. 

“I guess we should head back too,” Suga suggested, nudging Ameris to start packing up. 

“Same time tomorrow?” Daichi asked, already swinging his back over his shoulder. Ameris nodded as she latched sleepily onto Sugawara’s arm after they all finished packing up. 

“Geez, you should’ve drank the energy drink!” You scolded the girl but she just shook her head. With a sigh, you reached out for Daichi’s hand by his side and he subconsciously clasped his hand in yours. 

“We’ll see you tomorrow then,” Sugawara said with a tired smile, also exhausted from all the studying as he ruffled Ameris’ hair. 

“Text us when you get back,” Ameris softly spoke up before the two went off their own way. 

Daichi looked down at you, and you gave him a closed eye smile. Unable to resist, Daichi kissed the top of your head before saying, “Let’s head back home.”

So like I started to make some friends at college that I actually like. They’re cool, nice, smart, and funny. We’re all majoring in similar things. Last quarter when I met them I was obsessed with appearing normal and dressed like a Republican dad or something (but also I’m Jewish and wear a kippah so Ben Shapiro), I had deleted social media and it was honestly really good for me, I was super focused on school, I went to the gym, and I could wear short sleeves in public. This quarter I said “yeah screw that” and am back to dressing like an emo twink with mental issues, I dyed my hair, stopped getting it cut short, and also now that I’m more comfortable I talk more (and they follow my absolutely unhinged Instagram account). And like multiple people have randomly walked up to me and said “your Instagram stories are hilarious I love them” but I’ve also convinced myself that I’m annoying. And like it culminated this morning with me just deleting the Instagram app bc I no longer want to be seen or perceived. I’m convinced that they hate me. I’m scared that the upperclassmen keep me around out of pity and the other sophomores only tolerate me because I (used to) be really good at ochem (and bc they pity me). Every time someone texts me or says something to me I convince myself that they’re being sarcastic and they hate me. I’m constantly scared of saying the wrong thing after spending so much of my life speaking without thinking and hurting people bc of it.

Last week I was in ochem study group (led by one of the upperclassmen) and idk how this came up (I think talking about our plans after college?) and she said “you’ll do great in whatever happens, you’re smart, you have friends (some other stuff I don’t remember).” And I was just think to myself “do I????? Does anyone like me????”

Hi!

It was brought to my attention that the memes I post make it seem like I’m dying from an inordinate amount of work and school hours.

I can assure you that I am dying, but it’s not from no time, it’s from burnout and losing my passion for school. This is my 5th year at college (did 2 years in HS). Having a chronic illness makes it hard to make my success visible in terms of grads (ex: did shat for 2/4 exams for Ochem since I had to keep going to the ER for my back). I have to push past these barriers to show med schools that I’m committed and will succeed, but the unending pushing makes learning super un enjoyable at times and kills my soul.

Some of my bath towels are neon green and some are neon pink. Some of my hand towels are black and some are white.

Fuck. It’s been a while since I watched a movie. Uhhhhhhh I think I watched a movie a little more than a year ago in my friends dorm. Before that the last movie I saw in theaters was Neighbors 2 in May 2016

109. Is something irritating you right now? 

Yeah the math department at my uni. I fucking hate it. I hate all of them. Fuck the math department. In high school when I took calc 1 and 2 junior and senior year I loved it. I loved math. Now I fucking hate calculus and can’t stand going. F u c k t h e m a t h d e p a r t m e n t.

What makes you happy? Animals, my pets, memes, bugs, nature, ochem, my family, my online friends, christmas lights, weed, music, psychedelics, cold weather, RAIN, Eminem, emails that say class is cancelled, making people laugh or smile or just feel good about themselves, the Ber months (Sept - Dec), Subway, seeing other people succeed/ live good/happy lives, my trumpet (his name is Harold he’s my baby), my job, God, not wearing underwear, Bo Burnham, grey cloudy days, hot cheetos, tea, coffee, I could go on but I’ll leave it at that this is too long sry

I want to say no but I have no reason to say no. It wasn’t particularly a good day. It was just another day.

i’m fucking dying y’all this isnt even funny anymore i think i deadass might have to retake ochem. if you’ve been wondering why i haven’t been writing recently, it’s because of this fucking class. i’m already busy as hell with calculus, japanese, and psychology. ochem is equal to the amount of stress i get from all three of those together. if i don’t manage to put stuff out in the next month then just know i’m probably failing this fucking class lmao

starting from today i will be dedicating 30 minutes to an hour to studying ochem functional groups becuase i got a C+ last semester and that’s literally the lowest passing grade i can possibly get. so if i’m on here a little less often, i’m most likely off somewhere losing my mind about functional groups and stupid (nct) resonance structures. i won’t allow my gpa to drop any further from my 3.7 so i need to get at least something in the B range for ochem II

i guess i’ll use this as my ochem update thread and keep you guys posted on my quizzes and midterms and such if y’all are interested
